Spotlight: Niumalu Canoe Club
Niumalu Canoe Club was founded by Peter and Teo Chow in 1996 to perpetuate the sport of Hawaiian canoe paddling on Kauai. Paddling is a long-standing tradition in the Chow family, which they eagerly share with new and seasoned paddlers.Niumalu Canoe Club is open to men, women and keiki (children) who wish to challenge their mind, body and spirit while learning about the culture of Hawaii.
The Niumalu Canoe Club consists of a team of close friends who hang out at the beach, dance and eat good food. The team practices at Kalapaki Bay in Lihue Kauai. Offseason the team runs, bikes and competes in triathalons. Several of its members sit on boards of other nonprofits like the YWCA, Kauai Hoe Wa’a and the Koloa Early School. The team is in the process of getting a Koa Canoe made for the club; they are working hard to fundraise $40,000 to make this a reality.
