Park Partners – Hudson River Park
New York Outrigger is excited to continue our partnership with Hudson River Park to showcase the 2015 Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge on Saturday, June 20. Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 in Tribeca will be the launching point for the largest on-water sporting event in New York City, the largest outrigger regatta on the East Coast and one of the premier outrigger competitions in the world.
The first Liberty Challenge took place in 1997 along a very different Tribeca shoreline. Since then the Hudson River Park Trust has turned an ailing and neglected waterfront into one of the world’s most iconic waterfront parks with a focus on engaging local residents on rediscovering the Hudson River.
For nearly two decades the Hudson River Park Trust has worked to transform five miles of New York City’s shoreline from abandoned commercial piers into a recreational waterfront greenspace. Additionally, the revitalized waterfront has influenced the redevelopment of adjoining neighborhoods, from Tribeca in lower Manhattan to Hell’s Kitchen in midtown. Arguably, not since Central Park opened in the mid-Nineteenth century has a greenspace so dramatically influenced the development and quality of life of New York City.
New York Outrigger is proud of our long association with Hudson River Park and excited to continue to introduce the world’s top athletes and thousands of spectators to the park we call home. The Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge is a celebration of the continuing efforts of the Hudson River Park Trust and others to revitalize the shorelines of New York and New Jersey. Their efforts will not go unnoticed as thousands flock to Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 on Saturday, June 20 to participate in the festivities.
