Matariki

New York Outrigger is pleased to present Matariki New York to the Family Tent at the Liberty Festival in Hudson River Park’s Pier 26 as part of the 2015 Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge on Saturday, June 20.

Once a year, twinkling in the winter sky in the southern hemisphere just before dawn, Matariki makes her presence known.

Matariki is the Māori name for the star constellation Pleiades. The rising of Matariki in the southern skies in May and the subsequent appearance of the new moon in June of each year herald the beginning of a time of renewal and reflection; a time of remembrance for those who have passed through to the realm of the unseen; a time to reflect on the year that has just ended; a time to prepare for the coming winter season and the year ahead.

Matariki – small eyes, or eyes of the chiefs – is recognized as the Māori New Year. In June, in the time of Pipiri, Māori hold a month long celebration with music, song, dance, feasting, togetherness and community.

We welcome you to celebrate Matariki with us here at Hawaiian Airlines Liberty Challenge hosted by New York Outrigger with the following activities:

Children’s activities for Matariki in the ‘Ohana tent from 1pm
Decorate a kite to fly in celebration of Matariki, make your own tāonga (pendant) or get your own tā moko – Māori facial tattoo design face paint. A great family day out

For those who want to stay longer, Waiata Matariki with AMORUA featuring Ataahua Papa, Hone Bailey and friends as they bring Māori music and dance to the luau stage.
